One of the tools Kevin leverages to solve some of the more common supply chain issues is SAP Event Management (EM). Kevin is a recognized world-wide leader in this space. Since he first started with SAP EM in 2006, he has been an avid proponent of this solution for resolving constraints in the supply chain.

Kevin founded, and continues to moderate, the online SAP EM communities on SCN, LinkedIn and Facebook. A renowned speaker, he has contributed his expertise at many user group meetings and conferences around the world.

In addition, Kevin monitors several SAP-related online communities, including ERPGenie.com (www.erpgenie.com) and EDIGenie.com (www.edigenie.com). https://sites.google.com/a/erpgenie.com/genie-press/publications/sap-event-management/sapem2_a.png?attredirects=0
where the benefits lie and ultimately what value it brings to the table. This area is a must-read for a company's executives and for solution architects designing an implementation of the module.
  • Chapter 2 describes the technical architecture covering SAP EM's core services, deployment options and the differences between the various releases, up to and including SAP EM 9.2.
  • Chapter 3 covers the application system, providing details behind what is available on the side of the solution where the events and processes are generated. Typical SAP application systems include SAP ERP, SAP SCM and SAP TM.
  • Chapter 4 addresses the SAP EM module, giving the details behind what is available, its inherent functionality and how it is used. This chapter is for all those folks looking to see the detail behind what is provided in terms of functionality.
  • Chapter 5 provides details about how SAP EM and SAP Global Trade Services integrate. SAP Global Trade Services is SAP’s detailed solution for helping companies address their trade processes and ensuring they are executed in a regulatory-compliant fashion.
  • Chapter 6 explores details about how SAP EM and SAP Transportation Management integrate. SAP Transportation Management is SAP’s detailed solution for helping companies address all their transportation processes, from planning, tendering and execution to freight settlement.
  • Chapter 7 covers a very unique aspect of track and trace, serialized track and trace. In many instances, there is a very real need to
track a particular, unique, serialized item. SAP provides several solutions to help with this case, one of which is a flavor of SAP EM, called the SAP Object Event Repository. In this chapter, we will also describe SAP Auto-ID Infrastructure and SAP Advanced Track and Trace for Pharmaceuticals.
  • Chapter 8 offers a methodology to guide you through the needed steps to implement SAP EM within your organization.
  • Chapter 9 provides operational details around using SAP EM and includes a troubleshooting guide. This chapter delves into the details behind security, operational guidelines and system monitoring.
  • Chapter 10 outlines general useful information on SAP EM, including transactions, development tips and tricks, IMG listings, blogs, links and sample scenarios.

Foreword

Global supply chains have expanded rapidly and increased in complexity beyond our wildest imagination. It has become imperative for executives and their organizations to “sense and respond” not only to the macro market conditions but also to the product movement as demand increases or decreases. Multifarious and complex supply chains require an ability to monitor, report, adjust to and analyze the flow of materials on a day-to-day basis.

Therefore, organizations need to think differently about their businesses by seeing and acting with greater clarity. Increasingly, visibility lies at the forefront of executives’ minds. Looking beyond the four walls of a plant, or even the four walls on an enterprise, requires technology that can “see” when products have left the core ERP visibility.

As technology becomes more agile and powerful every year, its increased ability to process mountains of data, so-called Big Data, to provide information that can assist those responsible to make good, sound decisions becomes vital. In a highly data driven, highly networked world, Exception Management is increasingly becoming a mandatory management theory that requires implementation within complex sup-ply chains. With the volumes of data systems gather during the flow of materials, one can only focus on that which becomes an exception to the rule. These exceptions need to be sensed, addressed and re-solved within seconds — a challenging task when events across the supply chain and extended supply chain are not being tracked.

SAP Event Management helps organizations achieve product visibility beyond the four walls and into the extended supply chain; door-to-door (from supplier to customer) process exception management; visibility into data inaccuracy; and helps cross functional teams focus on specific KPI’s that give organizations the ability to sense exceptions and the agility to respond promptly to them.

As the world of technology and supply chains evolves, I am delighted to see that this book is also evolving (now in its second edition) to meet the changing needs. The book explores topics that not only provide process and material flow visibility, but also provide insight on how visibility can ensure trustworthy, actionable information that will transform the business’ modern supply chain through a smarter use of the SAP technology. This version, available in hardcopy and through e-readers, has expanded the contents to provide troubleshooting guides, insight into SAP Transportation Management, SAP Global Trade Services and SAP Fiori, JAM and HANA, to name but only a few additions.

As you explore the contents of this book, remember: visibility without trustworthy information is meaningless. but visibility without action is detrimental to the business. Make it count.
